Dental crowns explained

Drs. Terri Nguyen and Laura Huynh find that there are many patients who can benefit from the placement of dental crowns. Crowns are “caps” made of porcelain, which are bonded over the natural tooth to provide protection of the underlying tooth structure. Crowns are placed in many situations. They may be used to:

  • Bond to false teeth called pontics to create a dental bridge
  • Cover a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy (endodontic therapy)
  • Provide protection for a tooth that has a large cavity after fillings are placed
  • Place over the abutment of a dental implant to act as a false tooth

Process of placing dental crowns

Crowns are placed after a consultation appointment during which the dentists will determine the restoration is appropriate. When a dentist and patient are in agreement with moving forward with the placement of a dental crown, preparations begin. Tooth enamel is removed from around the inner canals of the tooth before impressions are made and sent to a dental laboratory. The lab fabricates the restoration from porcelain and sends it to the dentist so patients can have their restoration bonded in place.
