Let us begin with something we can all agree on – a healthy, beautiful smile is something that we all seek. A survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry found that 99.7% of all adults who took their survey, stated that they believe a healthy smile is socially important and plays a significant factor in a person’s self-confidence. One great way to restore and preserve a tooth that may have undergone severe dental decay or some form of aesthetic damage is a dental crown. Dr. Terri Nguyen and her team, at West Portal Family Dentistry, provide dental crowns to restore smiles in the San Francisco, CA, area beautifully.
Dentists have been turning to dental crowns for years to help restore the appearance and health of teeth. Let us look at a couple of reasons why a dental crown may be the best option to help protect or restore your smile.
When the inner nerves and pulp of a tooth become infected, that tooth will require a root canal to save it. A root canal involves a tooth being hollowed out through the removal of the infected pulp and nerves. This leaves the tooth particularly vulnerable to cracks and breaks after. Almost any dentist will cap a tooth that has undergone a root canal with a dental crown. A crown will reinforce the tooth, making it stronger so that further damage can be prevented.
If you have developed a significantly large cavity that requires a substantial filling, that tooth will normally need to be covered with a crown because much of the tooth (typically half of the original width or more) needs to be removed for the filling. This leaves the teeth very weak and prone to further damage. Covering the tooth with a crown will protect the tooth from future damage due to its weakened state.
