If you’ve recently lost a tooth, or teeth, due to trauma or decay, or if you’re facing an extraction appointment, you’ll soon be making decision about how to address the gap in your smile. You may know that your options include treatments such as dental bridges, dentures, or implants. However, more than ever patients are opting for implants, because they not only improve the appearance of their smile, but also to keep their mouth in its healthiest state. Dr. Terri Nguyen, a trusted San Francisco dentist, shares important information about dental implants.
It’s important to replace the missing tooth because it keeps the surrounding teeth from shifting, prevents sagging facial structure, and gives you the ability to eat, speak, and look exactly like you did before you lost the tooth.
A dental implant is a replacement tooth root and can be used if you have one tooth, several teeth, or an entire arch of teeth to replace.
During the implant process, a piece of titanium is inserted into and fuses with the jawbone. Once the bone has grown around the implant, a crown is created.
The implant process will take several months and several visits to the dentist’s office. First you will have the implant placed and then you will be given time to heal and for the bone to grow. That can take several weeks to a few months. Once it’s complete, you’ll return to the office to have the crown inserted. During the time that you’re waiting for the bone to fuse and the crown to be created, you will have a temporary replacement tooth.
It’s important to note that Dr. Nguyen and her team will make sure that you’re comfortable and relaxed during the entire process. Afterwards, you may have some swelling and pain, but it is usually mild and can be treated with an over-the-counter pain reliever
Dental implants are strong and secure. Once your implant is placed it will function exactly like one of your original teeth. You will be able to eat your favorite foods and speak clearly and confidently.
